The Nest is small and had to do everything. The strategy was to build the furniture into the architecture, so that nothing has to be moved to change how a room is used.

The kitchen is the living room

A shaker-fronted island with a seated end replaces both a breakfast bar and a side table. It is the first thing you meet and the place the household actually spends its evenings, so it took the largest share of the budget.

Built in, not fitted

The dining banquette, the window seat and the hallway bench are part of the structure. Removing loose furniture gave back roughly a metre of circulation across the plan.

Light, held low

Soft greys and warm whites keep the apartment bright through a northern winter, while timber and brushed nickel stop it from feeling clinical.
